Meet Andrew

Hello!  From an artistic home in Michigan, I headed west falling in love with the mountains and ocean and landing in Seattle, WA.

Creative in my marketing career, I didn't make the space for art unless I had a blank wall to fill. However, the tides changed, and I committed to my art as a practice of joy.

All about aprinke

I'm a gay man living in South Seattle with my boyfriend and dog Jack.  It's taken an unexpected, non-linear journey to launch my art career, but I'm doing it!  I'm so grateful to lean on my experiences and share my work. I say often "bloom where you're planted," and I finally feel like I'm blooming.

Since college in 2004, my handle has always been aprinke: first and middle initials + my last name. Aprinke is part of my identity, and coincidentally, aprinke autocorrects to sprinkle :)

Follow Your Stars

I named this first collection of work after being thrown off course, navigating uncharted territory, and having the courage to trust what's written in the stars.

Artistic Background

My mother is an untrained artist who encouraged us kids to do more art, whether at our kitchen table or as an art teacher when the school didn't have budget for art class. She exposed us to drawing outside the lines and embraced our creative experiments and curiosity. Thank you, Mom!

Until 2023, I only picked up a spray can or paint brush when a wall was too white or too empty. Outside of high school art class, I've been largely self taught. I attribute any success with my ability to see color and composition paired with a willingness to give an idea a try.

Lofted above a woodworking shop with a handful of other Seattle artists and makers, I have the space to make a mess, gather wood scraps, and have a kind community of creatives.

Creative Process

My Creative Process and Materials

Spray Paint:  I begin each piece imagining a time of day. Picking a color of blue, I go from there spraying layers of 20-30+ colors in each sky. It's gorgeous, but once dry, any amount of the pigment  falls off. I accept what's left and head back to the spray booth for two or three rounds.

Observe:  Once I have my spray-painted sky, I allow the organic shapes and movement dictate the landscape. Sometimes I feel like it's mountains, a striking horizon line, or combination of both. I've learned, you can't force it.

Upcycled Materials:  I often use what I have around me: household tools, old sample paint from interior design clients, scrap wood veneer from woodworking shops, and old Pandemic-era newspapers. I love giving things a new life.

Portfolio of  Work

I start every piece by picking up a color of blue. Lighter or darker, each layer and splatter of color develop the sky in unexpected ways.
